ISCI 761 M7: Web 2.0
Web 2.0 does not describe any singular internet based tool. In an article for Investopedia, Will Kenton (2022) states that the term Web 2.0 primarily described the "current state of the internet" which consists of "more user-generated content and usability for end-users compared to its earlier incarnation, Web 1.0." There was not a technical upgrade to the internet itself which lead to Web 2.0 but rather a change in the way the internet was used - including the number of users and the increasing diversity of the information sharing among them. A benefit of this is the access to adaptive technology: enhanced methods of technology use for people with a accessibility issue or impairment. Adaptive technology can also be assistive as a low to high tech tool that helps a person with a disability to function with greater independence. The ACT Center offers a definition for both adaptive and assistive technology as well as a list of tools that could be considered for the different categories.
An example of a tool that could be useful is Voice Dream. Voice Dream is a software available through the Apple Store that features reading, writing, and scanning abilities. The reader will convert text to an audible reading from PDF, plain text files, webpages, and Microsoft Word or PowerPoint. The reader feature also offers the ability to alter the text or audio to suit the user's needs and preferences. The writing feature is beneficial for editing as it will check formatting and produce an audible version of the product as it is typed. The writing will also converted to Microsoft Word or plain text. The scanner feature will create an audible production of the text that can be altered for the listeners preference. These are the three separate apps available through the Voice Dream Suite app bundle from the Apple Store. The cost of this bundle is a one time fee of $39.99 and has a rating of 4.1 stars. This resource would be excellent for students who struggle with their sight or with reading abilities such as dyslexia. For a student writing a paper, they could use the Writer app to have the paper be read to them as they write the paper which would help them to catch their own mistakes. A student with trouble seeing could alter the text on their screen from the reading while also having the text read to them by the Reader app. The access to this resource would have to be from the Apple Store as there is no access to it from the Google Play Store. If Apple products are not in use, AlternativeTo has a list of Google Play apps that are the equivalent of Voice Dream.
